Everything You Need to Know About the Miniskirt

21.02.2022

Nowadays we live in a society where it is mandatory that we cover our faces due to COVID-19, but nobody has said anything about our legs. Throughout history, both long and short skirts have been part of the wonderful world of fashion and in this article, I am going to explain from the '60s to nowadays all the types of skirts there have been.

Miu Miu's spring 2022 micro miniskirt reintroduced the truncated item and the miles of the leg it displays. In our Everything You Need to Know About the Miniskirt video, Vogue's Hamish Bowles puts it into context.

While short skirts were worn by noblemen in Ancient Egypt and women of the Duan Qun Miao in China, the miniskirt became popular in the West during the swinging 1960s, a time of youth, liberation, and The Pill that had some parallels with the Roaring Twenties, when flappers bared their gams to-gasp!-the knee. The fashion is said to have been started by Mary Quant in London and André Courrèges in Paris...

Hemlines change throughout time, and although the 1970s silhouette was long and thin, in the 1980s and again around 2000, a more forceful and provocative style emerged. Designers who are Y2K-obsessed are now performing their own calculations. In the nearly 60 years since miniskirts first hit the runway, a lot has changed.

Bowles points out that "what was previously a style promoted mostly by tall, slim, and young girls" is now "a fashion for people of various sizes, ages, and gender identities."
