Could we live without poetry?

Recently a thought came to my mind ¿ could we live without poetry? I think we can all agree there is a hierarchy of importance of the subjects taken in high schools. At the top of this pyramid of importance, we can find subjects like maths, or history, or physics ... and at the bottom of it, we find poetry. Why is that? Society makes us think that because maths helps us to resolve problems, poetry isn't important anymore? And because of that, could we live without poetry?

John Keating once said: "We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life."

Poetry is the reason why we believe in ourselves, is the reason why we think, and the reason why we feel. Poetry is so important because it helps us understand and appreciate the world around us. Poetry's strength lies in its ability to shed a "sideways" light on the world, so the truth sneaks up on you. Poetry, the highest form of literature, influences us because it shows different shades of human beings. In fact, poetry is one of the most ancient arts and also the product of human imagination.

Poetry also helps in understanding different perspectives. Teaching and learning from poetry can help students respect and understand the viewpoints of people across the globe.
